It features Neil Halstead, Joe Bennett, Robin Bennett, Ian McCutcheon, Tom Crook, Paul Blewett & Roger Proctor.

See them on the 2nd March at The Slaughtered Lamb in London.

For their second collection, Holton’s Opulent Oog gathered throughout last Spring/Autumn. They’ve dreamt up a spellbinder. Songs of mystery and imagination. Beatific, emotional, transporting, brimming with dreamy melodies and full of darkness and light – this is a special album.

The magic ingredients are Spanish guitar, violins, dubby keyboards and beautifully deft percussion. The album has a distinctive, carefully wrought sound, but it’s the variety within that sound, the sting and mystery of the lyrics that are so strong.

The album wears its contradictions on its sleeve. Confidant, ambitious tunes about fragilty and danger. Homilies to love and solidarity shot through with separation and melancholy. Here, a beguiling waltz, somewhere between menace and melancholy; there, a foray into psych-out chaos and back again; elsewhere joyful poppy sing-alongs. As if the Bonzos showed up to jam with the Beatles during the White Album. At times a moving, noble, trumpet-led melody should take it all to Mexico, but the album stays hovering over English landscapes, English hopes and dreams. This music couldn’t come from anywhere else.

————————————

…… and in other Mojave 3 news, Ian passes us the following exciting titbit “btw the Band Of Horses tour was great and we’re now thinking of possibly recording some new tunes! will keep you posted”

Holton’s Opulent Oog – The Problem Of Knowledge LP CD DD is out 4th February 2008 in all good record shops & online from Big Potato Records.

Holton’s Opulent Oog ‘The Problem of knowledge’ is a beautifully realised album full of bright tunes, dark thoughts, happy days & long nights. It’s a minimalist creation built around the Spanish Guitar & Violin. Lots of space to puzzle & get lost in. You will find yourself tapping your toe to the mellow snarl of Tab, smiling through See You in La La, sighing along with Oaki Room, ducking as McCutcheon’s drums drives the upbeat patch work psychedilia of Fountain of Hate at you, before holding your breath at Pour it Out.

Holton’s Opulent Oog features Ian McCutcheon (Mojave3 & Loose Salute), Simon Rowe (Chapter House & Mojave3), Caroline Banks (Seafood & Caz Mechanic). Holton’s Opulent Oog recorded and produced the album for £100 in/on their own analogue studio, where Holton produced Sleeping on Roads by Neil Halstead in 2002 & more recently Caz Mechanic.

Quotes so far-

“The Problem Of Knowledge is minimalistic just above the extreme, built
around a violin and Spanish guitar and it absolutely brilliant. It
seems that alternative country is coming back into popularity, and it
seems that Holton’s Opulent Oog are going to be leading the way”
Bearded

“With a heart-stopping collection Holton’s Opulent Oog are also set to
make waves with an alt. country gem The Problem Of Knowledge.” Music
Week

“Perfect Winter listening through its sheer tenderness & sincerity.
Guitar picking loveliness. A work of love, unique.” Notion

…just to let you know at no point have i said mojave3 are ‘throwing in the towel’.. it seems that because the salute record is coming out/out and mojave3 have no plans to record another record yet (as far as i’m aware!) that people assume the band is finished,, … there’s been a few online reviews that have said that,, bloody scandalous!!! ian

The Loose Salute is a gang of friends whose members are about reporting back from the world they live in together, making records that represent something for them, and bringing out the sheer sense that creating music is a celebration, not a labor. The Loose Salute was formed by Ian McCutcheon (drummer of Mojave 3) and Lisa Billson, who met Ian after he heard her singing along to Bob Dylan songs. Tuned To Love was made anywhere that the vibe was right – living rooms, garages, even Ian’s mum’s kitchen. Performing on the record is the core band of Ian (Drums & Vocals), Lisa (Vocals), Pete Greenwood (Guitars), Charlotte King (Harmonies & Percussion) and Al Forrester (Piano & Organ). Paul Noble added some Bass, surf Guitar and mixing skills and Ian’s school-yard buddy Pritpal Soor added some more electric Bass, Keys and a producer’s ears.
