Gorgeous soundscapes from ex-Slowdive duo
In Mojave 3′s world, everything is sacred. Pianos and glockenspiels are caressed
lovingly, whereas each vocal take comes labelled with a ‘Fragile: Don’t Break’
sticker. But rather than feeling over-revered, ‘Spoon and Rafter’ glows with a
melodic beauty that’s often overlooked in today’s stampede for the most eardrum-splitting
amplifier. Nine minute opener ‘Bluebird of Happiness’ is the soaring space-folk
mantra Spiritualized wrote while shooting up moon dust, whereas lunar lullabies
like ‘Hard To Miss You’ threaten to out-hush fellow heartbreakers Low. The overriding
tone, however, is of an opiate-drenched Americana, where Grandaddy spend their
days bathing banjos in bourbon. It’ll rock you, but in the nicest possible way:
gently, until you drift into a blissful dream state.
