CJ’s Review of Neil in Baltimore.
———————————
Neil played a solo acoustic set last night at Fletcher’s in Fell’s Point, Baltimore.
Neil seemed very mellow, but he didn’t seem to be bothered a bit by the slightly
intoxicated portion of the audience. At one point, he actually offered a guy
a harmonica as he had an extra one. Fortunately he didn’t accept the offer.
It was great to hear some band songs getting the solo treatment – he makes all
the fingerpicking look so EASY! The re-tuning he did before the first encore
of “Seasons” was somewhat ineffective, but Neil’s voice more than
made up for it. Of course, people kept calling out “Allison,” and
one guy asked for “Some Velvet Morning.” In the middle of “High
Hopes”, Neil stopped and said, “Oh, I fucked up!” and didn’t
go back to finish it. He then started on another one I didn’t recognize, but
the crowd were getting a little unruly and he stopped that one, too. I’m was
amazed by all the Neil-passionate people there who knew all the words to every
song.

I talked with Neil after the show: Mojave 3 will be recording in August, with
an album to follow early next year. He said that Rachel has finished about five
songs for an album that will come out on 4AD sometime after the Mojave 3 one.
I expressed some surprise about it coming out on 4AD, and he said “yeah,
they’ve given her as much money as they gave me.” I can’t remember all
the names of the people she’s working with, but Ashley Bates is of course one
of them.

Setlist – Ed or others can help me with the songs I didn’t get here – my song
recognition in the Halstead catalog is shameful at best.
