Early this month Neil played at the Swedish Hultsfred festival along with his new band – and you can watch it here at www.hultsfred.tv

(just scroll down the list on the left when you are on the site. looks nice if you have broadband!)

Also, when I say ‘new band’… that doesn’t mean that Mojave 3 is his ‘old band’!!! :-)

Neil Halstead in Bristol, UK

Me and my flatmate Jess went to the Louisiana in Bristol to see Neil Halstead. The Louisiana is a strange venue for him, but about the right size. I think he felt he died on stage, but he didn’t. He got a bit miffed with the amount of talking in the crowd at one point telling people there was a bar downstairs. I think if you pay your 7 quid you can do what you want myself. I think the acoustic set works – what a voice – but an additional sound would keep passing punters interested. He did most of the new lp and lots of Mojave 3. I shouted for High Hopes and he played it straight away – Jess’s fav song from the lp. Prayer for the Paranoid finished and he rushed off with no encore. Pity as if he had played “In Love With a View” it would have been a perfect night. We loved it and a few passing punters did too. We spoke to him after and he signed our CDs and said the next Mojave 3 lp has been recorded. Best song on the night: Martha’s Mantra. Rating 5/5.

Track Listing:
1 Seasons (Surf Style)
2 See You One Rooftops (Alt Version)
3 Sailing Man
4 Between the Bars
5 Seasons (Fort Lauderdale Remix)

Here’s what 4AD have to say about the record:

—————————————-
‘Seasons’, out in the UK on 17th June is the first proper release
from what is undoubtedly one of the most assured debut albums of the
year so far, ‘Sleeping On Roads’ by Neil Halstead.

Going back in to the studio to record this EP, Neil has (more or less)
carried on from where the album left off. Both ‘Seasons’ and ‘See You
On Rooftops’ are amazing alternate versions. In addition, you’ll find
the brand new tracks, ‘Sailing Man’ and a live acoustic version of
‘Between The Bars’, as well as an excellent Fort Lauderdale remix of
‘Seasons’.

Rising to the fore as one fifth of Slowdive before going on to form his
current band, Mojave 3, Neil recorded his first solo album last summer
back at his Cornish retreat (while the band took a break from their
gruelling schedule). Whether intentional or not, Neil pieced together an
album that captured the mood perfectly and got the critics raving. All
nine tracks shone with a laid back, almost stoned quality that helped
confirm not only Neil’s songwriting prowess but also his place on the
musical map. Here’s what the press have to say:

“Like finding a cosy spot on the coldest of days.” The FACE

“…could be summed up as gorgeous, melodic, woozy and wistful – yet
that still wouldn’t encapsulate its full beauty.” The Independent

“It’s probably the best singer-songwriter record I’ve heard released in
at least five years. His songs take that amazing dramatic path, leading
you from wallowing in sorrow to soaring in hope. Absolutely remarkable
and recommended to everybody.” Other Music NYC

“Neil Halstead’s triumph is that he makes it all seem so natural and
effortless.” The Fly

“…a darkly perceptive and compellingly wrought work of mighty, mellow
craft. Hauntingly beautiful.” Time Out

You can catch Neil touring the UK this June:

18th June – Nottingham (The Social)
19th June – Glasgow (King Tuts)
20th June – Middlesborough (Cornerhouse)
21st June – Bristol (Louisiana)

More soon…
