Rumors and gossip! - 08th January 2002 |
|
Brad has posted the follow on the boards:
“Ian
McCutcheon the drummer of Mojave 3 I have heard from a friend
of his that he is also working on a solo project himself. I believe
he wrote “Got My Sunshine” which is a beautiful song on “Excuses”
Cd… These solo projects are great, I’ve known for quite awhile
Rachel has had one in the works as well. Just as long as they
stay together as Mojave 3 tho…I’d hate to lose the band…tho
from what I’ve heard they are setting up for recording the 4th
Mojave 3 Cd…we could actually have 4 releases from them this
year…Neil, Ian, Rachel, and the new Mojave 3.”
AND
(regarding Neil’s CD)
“I
just read that it is actually coming out on Jan.22nd in the USA
and Canada and the 28th that was first announced is the UK release.”
So,
would be nice if all those records came out this year - but let’s
see shall we
Also,
note the ealier release for those in the US/Canada, the Lucky
ones!

Questions for Neil? Now, lots of maybe’s - but maybe I
get to submit some ‘interview’ questions to Neil, maybe. And if
so, maybe you wanna help? Maybe
post your questions here, and maybe those can be sent as well?
Just maybe of course!

review of Neil’s gig in London! - 19th December 2001 |
|
I recieved this nice gig report from Louise, kinda makes you wish
you were there!
Neil
Halstead - ICA Wed 12th Dec 2001
It was cold outside, but in the ICA it was warm, cosy, Neil shuffles
on the stage, silence “hello” he says. Everyone realises he’s
on stage (well after the dreadfulness that was Jacob Goulden beforehand
I’m not surprised there was a general apathy) and everyone cheers
and claps.. he starts on ‘See You on Rooftops’ from the new album
‘Sleeping on Roads’ then realises his guitar is out of tune…
“I’ll come back to that one later” he says, and for a split second
you’re taken back to his gig from earlier this year when he supported
Turin Brakes, and everything went to pot, songs were abandoned,
but when he played something he lost himself in, it worked…
ramshackle but good… so last night, he picks himself up “this
is a track from my new record. some of you might have heard it,
some of you might not, its not out until January” and from the
moment he starts playing the next song, you’re drawn into his
world… simple words, simple songs, genius. But so soothing…
so soothing that before I actually realised it, I was falling
asleep.. like a lullaby… the sound in the venue was perfect,
not too loud, not too quiet, I couldn’t tell you which songs he
played, bar the obvious ones (’See You on Rooftops’ ‘Two Stones
in My Pocket’ ‘Martha’s Mantra (For the Pain)’), playing a Mojave
3 song or two, with half of the band sat in the crowd watching
on… a lovely night, it all ended with ‘See You on Rooftops’
on an in-tune guitar and a quick shuffle off stage and a big thumbs
up to the audience… lovely

has a rare presence as a performer. Support comes from Manchester’s
Josephine Oniyama, showing why she is one of the fastest rising singer
songwriters in the UK today.

Neil
Halstead - Remix CD! - update! - 20th November 2001 |
|
In the post below, I’ve added the possibility to download some short
clips for each of the songs. So if you were wondering in which direction
the remixes were.. then check’em out!
But
be warned, the quality is terrible, and the samples are not good
edits… just random 45 second cuts from the tracks. Also, they
are in Windows Media Player format.
So,
they sound crap, but it’s not Neil, it’s the sample! I will try
to put up some nicer versions tomorrow. I’ve had the CD in my hand’s
for less than 10 mins, and now I must run.. no no time!!!!
Till
tomorrow!

Neil
Halstead - Sleeping On Roads - 24th October 2001 |
|
First good news in a while. I now have the press release for Neils
new solo album, with details of a remix 12″ and tour!
Neil
Halstead - Sleeping On Roads
Neil
Halstead is one of Britain’s most grievously underappreciated songwriters.
Underappreciated,
at least, in his home country. Mojave 3, the ramshackle and bittersweet
group that Neil has led since the demise of Slowdive in the mid-90s
have, over the course of three fine albums, built an enthusiastic
following across Europe and in America, where their most recent
record, “Excuses For Travellers”, has now notched up the best part
of 30,000 sales. Mojave 3 are set to reconvene at the beginning
of 2002 to make a fourth record; in the meantime, Neil has been
trying his hand at a selection of songs that don’t fit so comfortably
into Mojave’s gentle, rootsy template.
“Sleeping
On Roads” is the gorgeous result, and, just maybe, it’s the record
to change a few perceptions back home. The nine songs have been
nicely road-tested over the last 12 months, on UK tours in the company
of both Kathryn Williams and Turin Brakes, and audiences have responded
with genuine warmth. And in the studio, during the summer of 2001,
their bare acoustic bones were boldly fleshed out - drums, percussion,
electric guitar, vibes, organ, piano and an array of junkshop synths
have all been applied at one point or another, folding the deep,
sweet melodies into texturally-rich songs that flow and gather like
rivers.
The
album will be preceded by an EP length release that combines two
of its highlights - the woozily jaunty “Two Stones In My Pocket”
and a swelling, guitar-driven dream called “See You On Rooftops”.
They’re accompanied by genuinely great remixes : Melodic recording
artist Pedro - whose recent single “Chapel Was My Dream” was described
as possessing “pastoral wonder and elemental force” by the NME -
takes on “Two Stones In My Pocket” to bewitching effect, as do Fort
Lauderdale, who add laughter, space and sweet, sweet backing vocals.
Meanwhile, the Fort’s Memphis Industries labelmates Broadway Project
refit “See You On Rooftops” with driving Kraut propulsion unit.
The
two songs offer a pair of neat entry points into “Sleeping On Roads”,
but they give no hint of the sparse melancholy that can be found
in tracks like “Hi Lo And Inbetween” and “Martha’s Mantra”, or of
the Pacific Coast Highway motorik groove that propels “Seasons”
or “Driving With Bert” into their perfect Californian sunsets. The
title track, with its swinging, circular pedal steel patterns, is
as close as things get to Mojave 3, but even here there’s a sense
of suspension that marks “Sleeping On Roads” apart from any Neil’s
previous recordings. Far more than being a mere side-project, it’s
a record of murmuring charm and diffident invention, and it richly
deserves to win Neil a whole new generation of listeners.
“Sleeping
On Roads” is released on January 28th 2002. Neil will be playing
live in the UK, Europe and America to coincide with the release.

more
solo album details - 06th August 2001 |
Taken
from the 4AD website:
Also
nearing completion is Neil Halstead’s first solo record, which he
has been working on since Christmas. Anyone who saw Neil touring
with Kathryn Williams late last year will have an insight into parts
of the record - hushed, acoustic melodies and murmuring vocals -
but the remainder might come as something of a surprise - analogue
synths, strings and layers of guitars all contribute to make a record
which is as much about texture and slow-building grooves as it is
about emotion. As with Tanya’s record, an Autumn release is currently
being scheduled - more definitive news to follow…
